Areas of Study Offered: I am offering Private Psychotherapeutic Music Lessons to adults with chronic emotional issues other than addiction. Students learn to manage their issues by learning to play and write their own music. Lessons focus mainly on keyboard improvisation and songwriting. No previous musical experience is necessary. These lessons are meant to be an adjunct to conventional therapy.

Musical Education/Experience: Private study of piano and trumpet beginning at age 8. Study of classical and jazz music in public schools. Minor in Music Education at Bucknell University. Master’s degree in Music Education from New York University, with specialization in Music Therapy, 1979. Teacher of Music and Music in Special Education, Westchester and Rockland Counties, NY, 1984-1996. Sales Associate, Jazz Department, Tower Records, Yonkers, NY, 1996-2002. Concert performance, 2003 to present.

Teaching Philosophy: My feeling is that students with chronic emotional issues can learn to manage their issues by learning to play and write their own music. By focusing on keyboard improvisation and songwriting, students learn to express their emotions and develop their creativity with the goal of achieving a balance in their lives, writing and playing about their work, love, and recreational lives and all of the people they are close to. Gaining experience with spontaneity through learning to improvise helps students to become more effective and happy in general. The overall themes that I prefer to work with are peace, love, happiness, and the healing process.

Additional Info: Fees are reasonable and affordable. Lessons take place in the teacher’s home, which is accessible by public transportation. Students are welcome to take 2 or 3 paid lessons to determine whether they are right for them. I am certified in Music Education by the New York State Education Department.
